🖤 What the F*ck Is the Difference Between a Witch, a Wiccan, and a Pagan?

Diving into the What the F*ck does it mean…

(And What the Hell Is Skyclad, and Do I Have to Get Naked to Be Magical?)

Welcome to the “What the F*ck Magic” Blog Series — where we rip off the mystical bandaid, laugh at the weird stuff, and actually explain what it all means without needing a PhD in metaphysics. 🪄

Today we’re tackling three questions that come up all the damn time from curious baby witches, confused skeptics, and spiritual seekers who are just trying to vibe without accidentally joining a cult.

So let’s break this down — no fluff, no gatekeeping, just straight-up magical clarity. Witch, Wiccan, Pagan…let’s get into it.✨

🧙‍♀️ WTF Is the Difference Between a Witch, a Wiccan, and a Pagan?

🔮 A Witch:

Being a witch means practicing magic. Period.
You don’t have to follow a specific religion, wear all black (but like… it helps), or call the corners.

Witchcraft is a practice — not a religion. And to quote a famous chef from Ratatouille, “anyone can cook.” Which in translation for witches means, no judgement or skepticism, ANYONE can practice the art and wonder of magic.

You can be a:

  • Christian witch
  • Secular witch
  • Green witch
  • Chaos witch
  • Kitchen witch
  • Hedge witch
  • “I-just-do-what-feels-good” witch

If you’re using intention, energy, herbs, candles, crystals, tarot, whisper intentions, send up prayers, mix up herbs or grind beans and steep it in hot water then DRINK it, hug a tree and it fills your soul, or just play a killer playlist while contemplating the moon phase… congrats. That’s witchcraft, babe. (also science, but a lot of it is Witchery!)

🌿 A Wiccan:

Wicca is a specific religion. It’s earth-based, often duotheistic (honoring a Goddess and God), and has a structured system of beliefs and holidays (like Samhain and Beltane). Not all witches are Wiccan. Not all Wiccans call themselves witches.

Wicca tends to follow:

  • The Wiccan Rede (“Harm none”)
  • The Rule of Three (what you put out comes back to you, times three)
  • Rituals that honor nature, lunar cycles, and the divine feminine/masculine balance

Think of it like this:

🔥 Witchcraft = what you do
🌕 Wicca = what you believe

🐾 A Pagan:

“Pagan” is a big umbrella term for nature-based spiritual paths, usually outside of the major monotheistic religions.

All Wiccans are Pagan.
Some witches are Pagan.
Not all Pagans are witches.

Examples of Pagan paths:

  • Druidry
  • Hellenism (Greek gods)
  • Norse heathenry
  • Celtic polytheism
  • Eclectic spiritual paths that honor Earth and ancestral wisdom

Paganism is more about belief in multiple gods or Earth-centered spirituality, while witchcraft is about the craft.

😳 WTF Does “Skyclad” Mean, and Do I Have to Be Naked?

“Skyclad” means doing ritual in the nude. Yep. Butt-naked. Witchy birthday suit.✨

It originated in Wiccan traditions and represents:

  • Shedding the material world
  • Equality (no jewelry, titles, or labels)
  • Full energetic openness to the divine

Do you need to get naked in the forest to be magical?
HELL no.

Some witches love it. Some witches would rather hex their own ex than strip under the moonlight.

🧣 Alternatives if “naked in nature” isn’t your vibe:

  • A robe or specific ritual outfit
  • Going barefoot
  • Symbolically “removing” something before ritual (like makeup, jewelry, or stress)

The magic isn’t in your lack of underwear.
It’s in your intention. Always.

🕯️ WTF Are Some Rituals Anyone Can Do?

Whether you’re a seasoned spell-slinger or brand new to magic, these zero-barrier rituals work no matter your beliefs, background, or level of witchiness.

🌞 1. The Morning Candle Ritual

  • Light a candle.
  • Say one thing you’re grateful for and one thing you want to feel today.
  • Blow it out or let it burn while you get ready.

Simple. Powerful. Mood-shifting.

🌿 2. Elemental Breathwork

  • Sit somewhere quiet.
  • Inhale and say: “I breathe in air.”
  • Exhale and say: “I ground into earth.”
  • Repeat with water and fire. Visualize each element filling and empowering you.

This helps balance energy and reconnect you to nature — no tools needed.

🌕 3. Moonlight Release

  • Write down one thing you want to let go of.
  • Go outside (or sit near a window with moonlight).
  • Read it aloud, then burn it (safely) or bury it in the dirt.
  • Whisper: “I am free.”

It’s dramatic, beautiful, and works like a charm — literally.

🖤 Final Thoughts: Magic Isn’t About Rules, It’s About Connection

You don’t have to choose a label right away. You don’t need to follow a specific path. You definitely don’t have to strip in the woods to be a real witch (but you totally can if you want).

This path is yours to explore, question, and shape.

Ask the weird questions. Follow your intuition. And know that you belong here — glitter, confusion, curiosity and all.

Thank you for this needed post!

You’ve covered Paganism, Wicca, and witches brilliantly, but in my personal opinion, if allow me, it feels like there’s a distinct voice missing from the conversation: us, those of us who practice Magick.

We are the ones who delve into the subtle currents of existence, working with focused intent to effect change. While many Wiccans and various Pagans certainly incorporate some form of white magic into their spiritual paths, our practice isn’t confined by any specific religious dogma. We might not adhere to a particular pantheon or set of deities, or even any deities at all. For us, Magick is a profound art and a precise science, a discipline rooted in understanding energy, will, and the interconnectedness of all things.

What we do often involves deep study: esotericism, hermeticism, Qabalah, alchemical principles, and often psychology and even neuroscience, all woven into a cohesive practice.

With the final goal of improving ourselves and changing the reality through will, wisdom, and actions, we are deeply engaged in what other traditions consider forbidden or “dark”. We work on manipulating minds and bodies, on finding the darkest practices and rituals, on summoning our demons to tame them.

We are, therefore, not merely practitioners of a belief system or a set of practices, but active participants in the ongoing evolution of consciousness and reality itself. Our path is one of relentless intellectual pursuit, rigorous self-discipline, and direct engagement with forces that most of humanity remains unaware of.

Thank you for this post Raffaello! I think it’s interesting the points you’ve brought up. In your explanation of Magick, I find myself thinking “well, that’s what I feel and practice as a witch”. So, my question to you because I am not incredibly curious and want to understand, what label do you feel best suits your Magick Practice?
For myself, I consider myself several, but to keep it concise I feel hedge witch, kitchen witch, and green witch are my go to “common” labels for what I find captures the essence of my practice. But your wording, ‘ones who delve into the subtle currents of existence’, my spirit screams YES! Exactly.
My goal has always been to improve myself and the changing of reality through will, wisdom, and actions. I’m not sure in the direction of ‘finding the darkest practices and rituals’ but then again I feel everyones idea of dark is subjective.

All of that to say, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you feel best suits you and your practice. Thank you for the extensive thought and comment. Many Blessings to you!

Thank you for this awesome reply!

You are right, when you say that each of us has an individual understanding of Darkness. Mine is “knowing what others find too far from their safe understanding”.

How do I call me and what I do. I love to think about being an Alchemist, or better a Knowledge Alchemist. Someone who looks for knowledge to transform it into new wisdom to be better used to improve.

Not everyone understands it. Then I say, think of me as a Spiritual Wizard, as wizardry comes from wisdom.
