Why are we talking about Shadows?
You’ve probably seen it floating around your feed:
“Shadow Work is life-changing.”
“Shadow Work will ruin your day and heal your soul.”
“Do your Shadow Work or Mercury in Retrograde will do it for you.”
Cool cool cool… but also — what the actual f*ck is it?
Let’s talk about why witches, spiritual folks, and TikTok mystics everywhere are clutching their black tourmaline and crying into their journals. 🖤
Spoiler: shadow work isn’t about being dramatic — it’s about being real. And yeah… sometimes there will be tears.

🕯️ So, WTF Is Shadow Work?
Shadow Work is the practice of exploring the parts of yourself you usually ignore, avoid, suppress, or pretend aren’t there.
You know:
- The jealousy
- The bitterness
- The fear of being unlovable
- That little voice that screams “I’m not good enough” in the back of your head at 2am
Yep. That’s your shadow.
And Shadow Work is how we face it with honesty and love.
Coined by psychologist Carl Jung (yes, even therapists get witchy), the “shadow” is the unconscious part of your psyche. The stuff you’ve shoved down, hidden from others — and sometimes even hidden from yourself.
It’s not evil. It’s not broken. It’s just you… in hiding.
And shadow work is how we bring those parts into the light.
🖤 Why Does Everyone Cry About It?
Because shadow work hurts.
It’s emotional. Raw. Unfiltered.
It’s admitting:
- “I sabotage my own happiness because I’m scared of being seen.”
- “I judge others for things I secretly hate about myself.”
- “I pretend I don’t want love because I’m terrified I’m unworthy of it.”
…YEAH. It’s a lot.
But you know what else it is?
F*cking freeing.
Every time you peel back another layer of shame, guilt, or fear — you get a little closer to the real you. The whole you. The you that doesn’t need to pretend anymore.
Shadow work is the uncomfortable middle part between who you were told to be and who you actually are. I know, it’s deep but healing isn’t easy. Doing the work to be fully you is an uphill road but worth the journey. And you can bring snacks, so don’t stress about it.
🧙♀️ How the F*ck Do I Do Shadow Work?
You don’t need incense, moonlight, or a dramatic mirror (unless you want that aesthetic). You just need honesty and a willingness to look inward. A lot of you might be lifting a skeptical brow thinking, “this sounds a lot like therapy.” Well spotted, and yes, this is therapy without a therapist. It’s honesty without someone coaxing it out of you. It’s real, it’s intense, and it’s liberating.

Here are some no-fluff ways to get started:
1. Journal Like a Witch on the Edge
Ask yourself:
- What triggers me most in others?
- When do I feel small, insecure, or unseen?
- What do I avoid feeling or admitting to myself?
Be honest. Be messy. Burn the pages afterward if you need to. (Seriously, fire is great for this because it allows you to release your thoughts and at the same time keep it personal. A flair for the dramatic is great for the soul.)
2. Mirror Talk (Brace Yourself)
Look into a mirror.
Say aloud:
“What am I afraid people will see when they look at me?”
Now say:
“What part of me am I hiding… even from myself?”
Look into your own eyes. Don’t look away.
(Yes, this will make you want to sob. That’s the point.)
3. Pull a Tarot Card and Ask: What Part of Me Is Hiding?
Let the card guide you into the truth you’re avoiding.
Don’t just read the guidebook. Ask yourself what you feel. What does this card reflect in you that you’d rather not look at?
Shadow work with tarot? Brutal and brilliant. Highly recommended. I definitely bring a glass of wine with me when doing tarot shadow work. Necessary, no, but helpful, YES!
🪄 Pro Tips for Not Emotionally Imploding
- Don’t do this every day. Seriously. Shadow Work is not a punishment or daily routine. Truly think of this like therapy. You need time to digest your thoughts, and feelings. Go slow, there is no race to finish. (Mainly because shadow work is never really ‘done’.)
- Aftercare is sacred. Watch a comfort show. Take a bath. Drink water. Wrap yourself in a blanket and whisper “I love you” to your soul.
- Celebrate the little wins. If you had a breakthrough — even a tiny one — honor it.
✨ Why Shadow Work Is Witchy As Hell
Witchcraft is about reclaiming your power.
You cannot do that while rejecting half of who you are.
Shadow work is healing through truth.
And the more you accept your shadows, the less control they have over you. That’s real magic.
Because when you’re no longer afraid of your mess, your wounds, your rage, your heartbreak?
You become f*cking unstoppable.
💬 Final Thoughts: Light Doesn’t Mean Much Without Shadow
You’re not broken. You’re layered.
You are soft and sharp.
You are light and shadow.
And doing this work — even just dipping a toe into it — is an act of wild, sacred rebellion in a world that keeps telling you to be palatable, small, and accepted. The ONLY person that needs to accept who you are and love you fully is YOU!
So cry. Reflect. Rage. Forgive.
And when you’re ready, rise.
We’ve got you.
