Another Pretty Notebook, or Is It a Grimoire?
Let’s talk about the most misunderstood magical object this side of Salem: the grimoire.
Cue the dramatic music. Light the candle. Flip the dusty leather-bound book that whispers your name in Latin…
Or, y’know, open your $4 Target notebook with scribbled spells and a sticky note that says “Moon = Full?”
Both count!!
So… What Even Is a Grimoire?
At its core, a grimoire is your magical notebook. It’s a personal collection of spells, notes, rituals, correspondences, symbols, and wisdom you’ve gathered along your path. It’s equal parts spellbook, spiritual diary, and Pinterest board for your soul.
You don’t have to be in a coven. You don’t need ancient bloodlines or secret initiations. You just need a desire to remember your magic and a place to keep it.
📓 Grimoire vs. Book of Shadows

People use these terms interchangeably, but here’s a quick breakdown because they aren’t really the same so much as can be used in one book IF you’d like:
- Grimoire = Practical. Your magical cookbook. Spells, rituals, herbs, moon phases, sigils—think reference guide.
- Book of Shadows (BoS) = Personal. A shadowy space for inner work. Dreams, lessons, struggles, spiritual diary vibes.
Some witches keep two separate books. Others blend them into one big magical brain dump. No rules here—just your energy.
✍️ How to Start Your Grimoire (Without Getting Overwhelmed)
Let me guess: You saw one on TikTok that looked like it was bound in the hide of a dragon and written by candlelight with ink from the tears of your ancestors.
But here’s the thing: Your first grimoire can be a $1 notebook, a Word doc, a Google Drive folder, or a three-ring binder (which is what we use!). What matters is WHAT you put in it—and that you ACTUALLY USE IT!
What to Include in Your Grimoire:
- Your favorite spells (and the ones you’re tweaking)
- Moon phase meanings
- Herbal correspondences (rose = love, basil = protection, cinnamon = vibes)
- Crystals and their vibes
- Daily rituals
- Sigils you’ve made or collected
- Journaling prompts that crack you wide open
- Notes from rituals or dreams
- Any “WTF just happened?” witchy moments
This is your space. Messy is magical. Imperfect is powerful.
✨ Why You Might Want One
Not because witchcraft TikTok told you to. Not because aesthetic. Don’t do this because it’s popular. That isn’t what witchcraft is about.
Create one because:
- You’re growing. It’s nice to track that.
- You’re casting. You want to remember what worked.
- You’re transforming. You deserve to witness that shift.
Your grimoire is your mirror, map, and memory.
It’s your legacy. Your spell-archive. Your proof that you’ve always been magic—even when you didn’t know it.

🔥 Bonus Tips for Making It YOURS
- Color code your spells if you’re a Virgo at heart.
- Use stickers, washi tape, pressed leaves, or smudges of candle wax.
- Write in pen. Write in blood. (Kidding… mostly 😏)
- Make it ugly on purpose to get past perfectionism.
- Keep it sacred. Or don’t. Let it sit on your coffee table next to your remote.
Magic isn’t about gatekeeping—it’s about gate-opening.
